Interesting developments

So I was skimming through Microsoft’s CES ’09 keynote (which can be viewed online here) when I came across a pretty interesting part. They were showing off some games on Xbox Live (if I’m not wrong) and I was pretty impressed by their gameshow game “1 vs 100″ where a hundred people can play together on Xbox Live. But that’s a story for another time.

After that demo, they began talking about another game called Kodu, and they brought a 12-year-old girl named Sparrow up on stage to help demo the game. At first I was mildly amused that she was called Sparrow, but that’s when I was greeted with this:

Actual 12-year-old girl

Honestly? “ACTUAL 12-YEAR-OLD GIRL”. It seemed that Microsoft was trying REALLY hard to convince us she was ACTUALLY REAL. You know, just in case we thought she was a robot or cyborg or something like that. Or maybe we’d think she’s a guy? Or that she wasn’t 12-years-old?

Or maybe we’d think she was a bird?

Jokes aside though, the game is pretty interesting, it’s more of a game creator for kids, teaching them the fundamentals behind programming. For example Sparrow showed us how she could build a factory, and tell it to create a Wisp after 10 seconds, and then close after 11 seconds. The level of customisation available to the player looks pretty deep as well, with the presenter going “I’m glad you’re the one who’s doing this”, because of the way she navigated through the many, many radial menus, it’s clear this “programming language” takes some time to learn.

For now though, we’ll have to settle for an ACTUAL 12-YEAR-OLD GIRL to show us what the game is like.

iPhone 3GThe iPhone Dev team has been known for plenty of releases thus far. From the original Pwnagetool to QuickPwn, every single one of their releases helps owners of iPhones and first gen iPod touches (myself included) jailbreak their device. For those who don’t know, this essentially unlocks more features for the user, for example access to other third-party software, and also the ability to SSH into the device (ie. directly modifying the files in the device as opposed to merely interacting with it through iTunes).

While the team managed to unlock the first-generation iPhone (ie. allowing the phone to be used with other carriers instead of it being locked to the primary one) a long time ago, they seemed to have been stumped by the 3G iPhone’s new architecture. Released almost half a year ago, they never really managed to figure out how to unlock the second-generation iPhone… until now.

The iPhone Dev team blog was recently updated less than 24 hours ago with this post, announcing the release of a beta version of the program they call yellowsn0w. It seems like they’ve finally managed to release a program that is able to finally unlock the iPhone 3G after months of hard work. This is the program plenty of iPhone 3G users have been waiting for, others have been waiting for such a release before they go out to buy an iPhone. The idea of being tied down to a 2 year AT&T contract was just too restrictive for most people, considering how everyone has their preferred carrier.

Unfortunately, being a beta, there have been plenty of reports thus far of the program not working for many users. According to a poll on the hackint0sh forums, the program works for roughly one-third out of the users at the time of this writing. A one-third success rate really doesn’t seem to good, and maybe the iPhone Dev team should have worked with it a little longer before releasing it to the public. Of course, who am I to say what they should or shouldn’t have done. They probably ran out of test units for all we know, and kudos to them for finally making a breakthrough. Let’s just hope they manage to improve on it time and again until it works for the vast majority of iPhone 3G users.

There could be certain ramifications with the release of this program though. For all we know, Apple could possibly release a firmware update next week touting their famous one-liner “This update contains some bug fixes” (which they include with the supposed “description” of many of their updates, be it iPhone ones or not) that ends up breaking yellowsn0w. While Apple has always turned a blind eye to jailbreaking, they’ve taken a pretty strong stance towards using the iPhone with AT&T only for some reason. Thus, while it’s likely that Apple will indeed try to prevent further unlocks, let’s hope it doesn’t happen.

And to all iPhone 3G users, congratulations :) Now, we’re all wondering when the second-generation iPod Touch will finally receive its jailbreak.

Windows 7 DesktopOriginally slated to be released in January at the International Consumer Electronics Show, the beta of the newest version of Windows, Windows 7, has somehow found its way into BitTorrent trackers. Whether it was a disgruntled programmer or the one in charge of distributing the software itself, we’ll never know. Of course, none of us are complaining either.

For Windows 7, Microsoft has decided to build upon its previous operating system, Windows Vista. Instead of introducing a whole new slew of features, they’ve decided to make smaller, but yet necessary, improvements to Windows Vista. For example, they’ve completely revamped the taskbar, introducing features like consolidating Windows that belong to the same program in a single icon in the taskbar. They’ve also make changes to “traditional” Windows programs. For example, they’ve added real-world usage to the calculator like allowing you to calculate the number of days in between two dates, or even calculate your mortgage and lease payments.

However, they’ve also chosen to remove some of their old programs. For example, Windows Movie Maker is no longer bundled with Windows, and the previously built in photo gallery is gone as well. Furthermore, the long hated Windows sidebar is no longer present, instead Microsoft has chosen to implement gadgets in a very similar way to how Mac OSX does it (Dashboard). The difference being that Window’s gadgets reside on the desktop itself rather than on an extra “layer”, which is how Mac OSX does it.

All in all, improvements to Windows 7 are welcome definitely, but only time will tell if Microsoft can deliver a polished product on day one. It took both Windows XP as well as Windows Vista before they became the stable operating systems that they now are. However, even almost 2 years after Vista’s original release, there are still many (myself included) that prefer Vista over Windows XP. Maybe Windows 7 will finally be the OS that convinces such people to upgrade to the latest iteration of Windows.

I’ve never really seen the need to upgrade to Windows Vista. Thus far, Windows XP has usually done everything I need it to do for me. Even seven years after its initial release, Windows XP is still a pretty usable OS. With innumerable third-party applications available, everything that Windows XP can’t do, I just search for software that can. Not to mention Windows Vista is a real system hog, for most software and games, it requires twice the amount of RAM to run it smoothly on Vista as compared to XP.

Personally, I’m dying to try out the beta version of Windows 7. Unfortunately, the only spare computer with a partition I can spare is an iMac in Windows 7 supposedly doesn’t work very well in boot camp on Macs yet. I guess I’m going to have to wait for either better support, or a new computer.

Will Smith Gives$122,500 to Scientology

He also gave a combined $122,500 to the Church of Scientology, broken into these donations: $67,500 to the New York Rescue Workers Detoxication Fund, $50,000 to the group’s Celebrity Center in Hollywood and $5,000 to ABLE, another Scientology offshoot. Smith and his wife have also supported a private school called New Village Academy they opened this fall in suburban Los Angeles that uses Scientology learning concepts.

will smith.jpgSeriously, first Tom Cruise, now Will Smith. Is the cult of Scientology spreading through Hollywood like wildfire or something? Or do celebrities think is “hip” and “cool” to join a cult or something. Why do so many people still fall for the lie that is Scientology, despite tons of warnings on the internet. It’s been proven that Scientology is the cause of the deaths of several of its “worshippers”, but somehow the organisation still manages to slip through the arms of the law. Despite several movements by people in an attempt to warn others about the harm Scientology brings about, including the famous Annonymous, it seems like there are still people getting sucked into it.

Speaking of Annonymous though, where have they been lately. They started posting plenty of Youtube videos awhile ago, but at the time of this writing, their last video was 5 months ago, and the last login to the Annonymous channel was 4 months ago. Did something happen to them? Or did they merely get tired to making videos already.

At least some other anti-Scientology sites still seem to be up and running, and seems like the people there are still relatively active. Navigate to the Annonymous Youtube channel and look under “Interests and Hobbies” for a list of all of them.

And now, I’m beginning to regret spending money on that crappy movie, Hancock.

They are Anonymous, they are legion, they do not forgive, they do not forget, expect them.

Macworld KeynoteIn a shocking turn of events, Apple has suddenly announced that it will no longer be present at Macworld Expos after 2009. Next month’s keynote will be Apple’s last at one of these events, which is a major letdown in my opinion.

What’s even more surprising is that it seems like Steve Jobs won’t be the one giving this final keynote, instead he’s handing the torch down to Phil Schiller, Senior VP of Worldwide Product Marketing, and also a familiar face at many of Apple’s Keynotes, frequently helping out in certain segments. Still, Phil probably won’t be able to conjure up the same RDF (reality distortion field) that Jobs is a master at, the keynote just won’t be the same without Steve Jobs himself.

Still, the fact that Phil Schiller is giving the keynote isn’t as big of a deal as the fact that Apple will no longer be present at Macworld Expos any longer. You really have to wonder how long Macworld will continue to last in this case, since plenty of people pay the exorbitant entry fees just so they can watch Apple’s keynote. It’s probably the most exciting part of the entire Expo, watching Steve Jobs introduce his latest and greatest products under his RDF.

Also, one really has to wonder why in the world did Apple decide to stop attending these Macworld events. According to the press release:

Apple is reaching more people in more ways than ever before, so like many companies, trade shows have become a very minor part of how Apple reaches its customers. The increasing popularity of Apple’s Retail Stores, which more than 3.5 million people visit every week, and the Apple.com website enable Apple to directly reach more than a hundred million customers around the world in innovative new ways.

To me, these excuses really sound like what they are: excuses. And they’re lame attempts at trying to justify why Apple won’t be appearing at trade shows any more. Just because they have more means to reach its customers doesn’t mean that by doing so through Macworld keynotes is any less effective. In fact, introduction of new products through other means besides keynotes probably won’t have big of an impact, as the suspense leading up to the keynote and the final revelation of the product is probably the most exciting part of it all. New products which were introduced through press releases or their website have never gotten me as excited as those that were introduced at an Apple Keynote, they’re just so much more exciting to watch.

There has to be some underlying reason as to why Apple has decided to take this step. Maybe they’re really being affected by the recent economic crisis? Which is really not that impossible, considering how they’ve decided to keep their prices at such a high level when most people obviously can’t afford them. Or maybe the rumours of Steve Jobs’ failing health (which he debunked in one of his keynotes) some time ago are actually true? The rest of us will never know the actual reason, but let’s just hope Apple will continue making such a lasting impression on the personal computer market for a long time to come.

Wordpress logoAs I stated in the earlier post, Blogger used to be my platform of choice a few years back thanks to its infinite level of customisation, for it allowed users to edit the raw HTML code however they liked. It’s a feature that WordPress.com didn’t, and still doesn’t, have. However, over time I began to realise how ridiculous my blog skins were getting, and decided to switch over to WordPress. While it didn’t offer as much customisation options as blogger, it was still a really simple and effective platform, and I’ve come to love it over the years.

This blog now is running on WordPress 2.7 RC-1, which has been around for quite some time. WordPress.com is also running it I’m guessing, though for some reason their version doesn’t feel as buggy to me (or maybe it’s just me). Personally, I’ve encountered a few bugs with this version, but they’re minor ones, and I’m willing to live with them.

So I’m patiently twiddling my thumbs here, waiting for the official version of WordPress to be released. Hope it gets released soon, I could do with those few bug fixes. After RC-1 has been out for so long already, they still haven’t bothered to even provide an estimated release date, even though there really are only a few bugs to fix in my opinion.

Here’s hoping I can hit “Upgrade” in my dashboard soon.

Obama BidenSo, after resoundingly defeating John Mccain in the 2008 United States Presidential Elections, former presidential candidate Barrack Hussein Obama has now become president-elect. I won’t lie to you, I’ve been rooting for Obama for quite some time, but that’s really because I’m a Digg user and everything there is pro-Obama and anti-Mccain. Oh and not to mention anti-Palin, though probably with good enough reason.

In actual fact, I’ve never really bothered to keep up with the presidential elections, sure I know the names and just a tiny bit of their policies, but other than that I’ve really been more interested in the gossip about Palin and the like, much more entertaining for me. It’s not that I’m completely politically apathetic, but whoever the new president is won’t really have much significant impact for me. Most of the issues they argue about in debates mainly concern the American people, and being a non-US citizen, I just don’t feel the significance of their policies as much as an American would.

That said, if I were an American citizen, I’d most probably vote for Obama. He’s promising the most for the average citizen, tax cuts, etc. Though there’s one thing I worry about. He’s always promised that he’ll end the war in Iraq “responsibly”, what exactly that means, no one knows. Still, most people have definitely been caught up in his rhetoric, thinking “Mccain’s going to stay in Iraq forever, Obama’s theh only way out”. It’s hardly surprising of course, considering how he utters words like this:

Mccain: Americans Fine With Troops In Iraq For 10,000 Years

The title is mere sensationalism though, if people actually watch the video, he says something along the lines of how he’s fine with Americans staying in Iraq only if the bloodshed stops, which is reasonable enough. He states about how Americans don’t complain about troops being stationed in Germany, Japan and North Korea as well. However, he’s really got to be crazy if he thinks the troops themselves don’t mind being stationed in a foreign country. Still, he has a point that there really isn’t as much outcry over those troops simply because their lives aren’t in as much risk as those stationed in Iraq, that’s why he’s fine staying in Iraq for so long.

In comparison, Obama keeps stating that he’ll end the war in Iraq responsibly “within 16 months” as well as withdraw troops within that same time. However…

Under the Obama-Biden plan, a residual force will remain in Iraq and in the region to conduct targeted counter-terrorism missions against al Qaeda in Iraq and to protect American diplomatic and civilian personnel.

I don’t know how many people actually know about that, the way Obama’s rhetoric has been putting it across seems like he’s going to take them all out. Furthremore, no one really knows what will happen if most of the troops are withdrawn so quickly. The American lives that are being stationed there are really serving as a deterrance right now. Who knows what will happen if that deterrence disappears.

John MccainStill, Mccain’s on the losing end here. Most American citizens will no doubt vote for Obama with regards to this matter. Mccain’s the one who’s been supporting the war which cost more lives than 9/11 did and he wants them to remain there for an indefinite period until Iraq is stable enough. Oh and not to mention there’s that problem of the economy, which Mccain himself admits he has little experience with. Then there’s that issue of Palin……

On the whole, I’m still glad Obama got elected, as is 53% of the electorate, compared to Mccain’s 46%. His ability to inspire the American public just with his rhetoric counts for a lot by itself, while it won’t have any tangible ramifiations, it does a lot for their morale and will definitely benefit the country as a whole. His policies will aid the average working class American citizen and the fact that Americans are even willing to elect an African-American as the President of the United States speaks volumes by itself.

So congrats to President-Elect Obama, here’s hoping he will effect the change he’s promised.

I mean even if Mccain + Palin had gotten elected, I really don’t know if they could do a worse job than Bush…
